SC stays Allahabad HC's order quashing UP board of Madrasa education act.

The Supreme Court halted the implementation of the Allahabad High Court's decision to invalidate the UP Board of Madrassa Education Act, citing potential adverse effects on the 17 lakh students. The apex court expressed the opinion that relocating students to other schools was unnecessary. A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud issued notices to the Centre, Uttar Pradesh government, and other relevant parties regarding appeals against the high court's ruling.

Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud emphasized the state's legitimate interest in ensuring quality education for students but criticized the high court's decision as being, in his view, unjustifiably broad. The Supreme Court asserted that the purpose of the Madrassa board is primarily regulatory and that the high court's decision incorrectly conflated Madrassa education with the regulatory powers of the board. Consequently, the Supreme Court temporarily suspended the contested judgment. On March 22, the Allahabad High Court had deemed the Uttar Pradesh Board of Madrassa Education Act, 2004, unconstitutional, citing concerns about its compatibility with secular principles, and instructed the state government to integrate current Madrassa students into the formal education system.
