Situation is like Sir Alex Ferguson…': Vaughan on 'God' MS Dhoni's presence in dressing room with Ruturaj Gaikwad
Michael Vaughan suggests leading CSK with Dhoni present is challenging for Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad took over as captain in IPL 2024.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that leading Chennai Super Kings (CSK) must be a challenging task for Ruturaj Gaikwad, especially with the iconic figure of Mahendra Singh Dhoni still present in the dressing room. Gaikwad took over the captaincy from Dhoni at the beginning of the IPL 2024 season, as CSK signalled a transition in leadership. Vaughan compared Gaikwad's situation to that of a new manager stepping in while a legendary figure like Sir Alex Ferguson remains in the dressing room. He highlighted the difficulty of leading a team with a player of Dhoni's stature still actively involved.
Despite this, Vaughan acknowledged Dhoni's decision to step aside and support Gaikwad in his new role. Since becoming captain, Gaikwad has faced a mixed bag of results, starting with a couple of wins followed by consecutive losses. However, CSK's recent victory over Kolkata Knight Riders has reinvigorated their title defence. Dhoni has been seen supporting Gaikwad on the field, offering advice on field placements and other aspects of the game. Gaikwad's unbeaten 67-run innings against KKR showcased his return to form, but his strike rate this season, which stands at 117.42, has been a concern for CSK.
Vaughan advised Gaikwad to focus on scoring big runs to solidify his team's position and take control during matches. He emphasized the importance of Gaikwad's performance in determining the team's success and suggested that consistent scoring would boost his confidence and contribute to the team's overall performance.
