'AAP mired in quicksand of graft': months after ED raid, Delhi social welfare minister quits.
AAP MLA resigns citing party corruption. Under investigation for alleged money laundering.
AAP Patel Nagar MLA and Delhi Cabinet minister Raaj Kumar Anand resigned from the primary membership of the party on Wednesday, citing its entanglement in corruption. He addressed a press conference at his residence, where he expressed regret that despite the initial promise of transforming politics for the better, the AAP had succumbed to the same malaise it once opposed. Anand criticized the party for neglecting the ideals of social justice, particularly in its treatment of Dalits and individuals from backward communities within the party's ranks.
He emphasized the disparity between the party's rhetoric, symbolized by frequent displays of Babasaheb Ambedkar's image, and its actions. Despite legal mandates for reservation, Anand pointed out that none of the party's 13 MPs hailed from Dalit or backward communities. He declared his resignation from the party, the government, and his ministerial post, citing an unwillingness to be associated with corrupt practices.
Anand's resignation coincided with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's detention in connection with the scrapped Delhi excise policy. Additionally, Anand himself faces investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) regarding alleged money laundering activities, particularly concerning unaccounted business investments and hawala payments to China in 2023. The ED claimed to have found evidence of such activities during searches at Anand's premises and those of his associates. Anand stands accused of evading customs duty amounting to approximately Rs 7 crore on various imports, as per the ED's complaint.
