How Much Minimum Salary is Required to Apply for a UK Work Visa? New Norms Explained

The UK government, under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's leadership, aims to curtail immigration by implementing stricter visa regulations, particularly focusing on work visas. Concerns over the high influx of migrants, totaling 745,000 in 2022, prompted the government to reassess its immigration policies.

Notably, skilled work visa grants to India surged by 63% from 13,380 in 2021-22 to 21,837 in 2022-23, indicating a significant trend in migration patterns.

The revised norms stipulate a substantial increase in the minimum salary requirement for UK visa applicants, particularly those applying through the points-based system (PBS). The previous minimum salary of £26,200 has been raised significantly to £38,700, marking a nearly 50% increase. However, certain professions such as healthcare workers, teachers, and social sector workers are exempt from this requirement. Nevertheless, overseas workers under these categories are barred from bringing dependents with them.

Family visas, which previously required a minimum income of £18,600, saw an increase to £38,700, causing concern about the separation of families. In response, Sunak announced a phased approach to raising the threshold, initially to £34,500 and eventually to £38,700 by early 2025.

Despite these changes, individuals renewing existing family visas are exempt from meeting the new salary criteria, providing some relief to current visa holders.

The Home Office clarified that the intention behind these reforms is to control immigration and address societal concerns about the strain on public services and resources. However, critics argue that these measures risk further exacerbating family separation issues and may impede the recruitment of skilled professionals.

The UK government's emphasis on raising the salary threshold underscores its commitment to restructuring the immigration system to prioritize economic stability and address public apprehensions about immigration levels.
