UK weather: Friday could be the hottest day of the year so far - with temperatures well above average this weekend

The UK is experiencing a rise in temperatures, expected to remain well above average for the next few days. With highs reaching 20C (68F) in parts of England today, forecasters suggest a 30% chance of breaking the current record for the hottest day of the year, set at 20.9C (70F) in West Suffolk last Saturday due to the influence of Storm Kathleen.

The warmth is attributed to a southwesterly airflow across the UK and Ireland. Friday is anticipated to bring the highest temperatures so far this year, with potential highs of up to 22C (72F) in southeast England, followed by similar conditions on Saturday before cooler air arrives from the North West. Mild nights are also expected, with temperatures remaining in double figures on Thursday and Friday nights.

The Met Office concurs with this forecast, predicting dry and sunny conditions for England and Wales on Friday, albeit with more cloud cover in the far west. London could see highs of 18C, while cities like Belfast, Liverpool, and Newcastle may reach peaks of 17C.

The warm and sunny weather is forecasted to persist in the South and South East on Saturday. However, overnight temperatures may not drop below 13C (55F) in some areas, though still shy of the April record of 15.9C (60F) set in 2018.

Despite the dry and warm conditions in some regions, northern and western areas may experience occasional rain. The spell of warmer weather is temporary, as cooler air is expected to sweep southwards by Sunday, accompanied by blustery showers at the start of the following week.

In essence, while the UK enjoys the reprieve of warmer temperatures and sunshine, changes are on the horizon, signalling a return to more typical spring weather conditions.
