CIC Expresses 'Severe Displeasure' At Election Commission For Not Responding To RTI On EVMs For More Than A Year.

In its recent order, the Central Information Commission (CIC) has rebuked the Election Commission of India (ECI), expressing "severe displeasure" at its failure to respond to a Right to Information (RTI) Act request concerning Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for over a year.

The RTI inquiry sought information about the steps taken by the election commission in response to a "representation" from prominent figures regarding concerns about the reliability of EVMs and VVPAT machines in elections. Characterizing this as a "serious breach" of regulations, the CIC has directed the EC to provide a written explanation.

Chief Information Commissioner Heeralal Samariya stated, “After reviewing the case records and hearing submissions, the Commission expresses strong disapproval of the former Public Information Officer's failure to respond to the RTI Application within the timeframe stipulated by the RTI Act. Consequently, the Commission instructs the former PIO, through the current PIO, to submit a written explanation for the significant violation of RTI provisions.”
