Second batch of Indian military troops leave Maldives: Report

According to local media reports from Edition, Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu disclosed that the second group of Indian military personnel stationed on the second platform has departed from the Maldives. This event reportedly occurred last Thursday, as Edition reported on Saturday. However, there has been no official confirmation from the Indian side regarding this development thus far.

President Muizzu further affirmed that the final contingent of Indian military personnel would adhere to the agreed-upon departure date and exit the Maldives by May 10. Quoted in the report, President Muizzu emphasized the impending withdrawal of the remaining Indian military personnel, in line with the established agreement between the two nations. He reassured that all foreign military presence would be concluded before the specified deadline, underscoring his commitment to fulfilling promises made. These statements were made during a campaign rally preceding the Maldives' parliamentary election scheduled for April 21.

Earlier reports indicated the departure of the initial batch of 25 Indian troops from the island nation around March 13, marking the initiation of the withdrawal process.

President Muizzu's appeal to India for the withdrawal of military troops stationed in the Maldives was made shortly after assuming office. In January of the current year, he formally requested India to facilitate the complete withdrawal of military personnel by May 10. The agreement between the Maldives and India sought to replace the stationed Indian military personnel with trained civilians from India to oversee military aircraft operations.

This diplomatic arrangement underscores the evolving dynamics of bilateral relations between the Maldives and India, with both nations working towards a mutually agreeable resolution regarding military presence on Maldivian soil. As the deadline approaches, the focus remains on the fulfilment of commitments made and the smooth transition envisioned in the agreement.
