Israel on alert after unprecedented Iranian attack
Israel remains vigilant following an unprecedented Iranian assault, heightening tensions and prompting heightened security measures across the nation.
Iran has initiated a retaliatory strike against Israel by launching a large-scale assault involving hundreds of aerial drones and missiles. This marks the first direct confrontation between the two adversaries, who have long been engaged in a covert conflict, often through proxy forces.
The Israeli military reported that Israel and its allies successfully intercepted over 300 cruise missiles and drones, the majority of which were targeted outside Israeli airspace. US President Joe Biden confirmed US assistance in neutralizing a significant portion of the incoming projectiles.
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that the attack targeted specific military sites, following a vow for retaliation after an airstrike on its consulate in Syria earlier in April, resulting in the deaths of seven IRGC officers. While Iran attributed the attack to Israel, the latter did not confirm or deny its involvement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a war cabinet meeting in response to the Iranian assault and held discussions with President Biden, who reiterated the US's unwavering commitment to Israel's security.
According to Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), some Iranian missiles did breach Israeli territory, causing minor damage to a military base without any casualties. Additionally, a seven-year-old Bedouin girl sustained injuries from falling debris in the southern Arad region.
The IDF underscored the severity of the Iranian attack, characterizing it as a significant escalation. Hagari emphasized Israel's collaborative efforts with its allies to defend against the assault, noting that the overwhelming majority of the projectiles were successfully intercepted.
In a separate briefing, Hagari disclosed that Iran had launched over 300 projectiles, with nearly all intercepted, and highlighted that some launches originated from Iraq and Yemen. The situation remains fluid as both nations navigate the aftermath of this unprecedented exchange of hostilities.
