Kerala woman among 17 Indian crew members of ship seized by Iran returns home
Kerala woman, part of 17-member Indian crew on ship seized by Iran, safely returns home, marking a relief for families.
The Indian crew members, including Ann Tessa Joseph, who was the sole woman among them, aboard the Israel-affiliated cargo vessel MSC Aries, seized by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Strait of Hormuz on April 13, encountered a significant development. Ann Tessa Joseph, a deck cadet from Thrissur, Kerala, was successfully released and returned home with the collaborative efforts of the Indian embassy in Tehran and the Iranian government. She arrived at Cochin International Airport on Thursday afternoon.
The crew, consisting of 17 Indians out of 25 members, faced the seizure due to alleged violations of maritime laws, as stated by Iran's foreign ministry. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, affirmed that Joseph's repatriation was made possible through the coordination of the Indian embassy and Iranian authorities. The MEA is actively engaged with Iranian authorities to ensure the well-being of the remaining 16 Indian crew members, who are currently in good health and in contact with their families in India.
Jaiswal shared a photo on social media showing Joseph being welcomed at Cochin airport by the regional passport officer. The Indian embassy in Tehran continues to monitor the situation closely and maintain communication with the remaining crew members.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the matter, emphasizing the importance of the crew's release, yet the specifics of his statement were not elaborated upon in the provided information.
