Following the detection of elevated benzene levels near the northern border of Aamjiwnaang First Nation, a chemical plant in Sarnia is undergoing shutdown procedures. INEOS Styrolution, a chemical manufacturer, announced the cessation of operations for maintenance and to address a mechanical issue, as conveyed in an email to Global News on Saturday.
The company refrained from explicitly linking the shutdown to the recent benzene level spikes, which peaked at 115 ug/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter) on April 16. Ontario's Environment Ministry stipulates an annual average benzene limit of 0.45 ug/m3. However, concerns have arisen as numerous Aamjiwnaang residents reported feeling unwell, with an undisclosed number requiring hospitalization.
Emphasizing the priority of employee and community well-being, INEOS Styrolution assured Global News that operations would resume post-resolution of the issue. Despite this assurance, several sources within Aamjiwnaang First Nation were unaware of any planned shutdown for the month.
The Chief of Aamjiwnaang First Nation, along with representatives from its Environment Department, urged the provincial government to intervene, advocating for the facility's closure until benzene emissions cease.
