How many seats will the BJP win? Top economist Surjit Bhalla's prediction for Lok Sabha election 2024

Renowned economist and political analyst Surjit Bhalla has made a bold prediction regarding the ongoing 2024 Lok Sabha election, suggesting that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could surpass its remarkable performance from the 2019 polls. Bhalla, known for his insightful analysis, shared his views in an interview with NDTV, where he discussed the potential outcomes based on his understanding of the voters' mindset.

Bhalla, whose recently released book ‘How We Vote’ delves into the intricacies of voter behaviour, projected that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP might secure an impressive 330 to 350 seats in the current general elections. This projection, if realized, would mark a significant achievement for the party.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) clinched a commanding victory with a total of 353 seats, of which 303 were secured by the BJP alone. In stark contrast, the main opposition, the Indian National Congress, managed to secure only 52 seats, a far cry from the NDA's dominance.

According to Bhalla's analysis, the BJP's potential to secure 330 to 350 seats is statistically plausible. Importantly, this projection is solely for the BJP, excluding its alliance partners. He suggested that the BJP might witness a notable increase of five to seven per cent in the number of seats compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

While expressing his views, Bhalla acknowledged the possibility of the upcoming election being a 'wave' election, a term often used to describe elections where a particular party or leader gains overwhelming support across various demographics. However, he also cautioned that not every election necessarily becomes a wave election, indicating that the outcome could vary.

The prediction made by Surjit Bhalla carries significant weight, given his expertise in economic and political analysis. His insights provide valuable perspectives on the current political landscape and the potential trajectory of the ongoing Lok Sabha election.

As the election progresses, all eyes will be on the unfolding dynamics, and Bhalla's projections will be closely scrutinized to gauge the pulse of Indian democracy and the future direction of its governance.
