UK votes in local elections that may test PM Rishi Sunak’s leadership
The UK casts ballots in local elections potentially assessing PM Rishi Sunak's leadership strength amid various challenges.
Britons are heading to polling stations this Thursday for a series of local elections, potentially placing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a precarious position should the Conservative Party suffer substantial setbacks. Over 2,500 council seats, 25 positions in the London Assembly, and 10 regional mayoralties are up for grabs, with voting open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Initial results are anticipated to trickle in early Friday, with some areas continuing the count until Sunday.
The governing Conservatives have been trailing behind Keir Starmer’s Labour Party in national polls for an extended period. Conservative Peer Robert Hayward, a specialist in local elections, suggests that the Tories may relinquish over 400 of the 900 council seats they currently hold. However, the party's morale and the potential for Sunak's detractors within the party to initiate his removal could hinge on the outcomes of just two races: the mayoral contests in Tees Valley and the West Midlands, featuring Ben Houchen and Andy Street, respectively.
