Mumbai rains: Giant billboard collapses in Ghatkopar amid dust storm. Video

A massive billboard collapsed in Mumbai's Ghatkopar amid strong winds and a dust storm that struck the city early Monday evening, resulting in at least seven people being injured and taken to the hospital. According to statements from civic authorities, there are fears that some individuals may be trapped under the hoarding, prompting a search and rescue operation in the area. A dramatic video captured the moment the white billboard fell onto a petrol station in Ghatkopar East, highlighting the intensity of the situation. The inclement weather, characterized by rains and gusty winds, affected various parts of Mumbai and neighboring districts on Monday, leading to disruptions in Metro and local train services. The weather office issued a "nowcast warning," forecasting a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and moderate to intense rainfall for Mumbai, as well as the neighboring districts of Thane and Palghar. An official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate spells of rain with gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph likely to occur at isolated places in Mumbai within the next 3-4 hours. The adverse weather conditions significantly impacted public transportation in Mumbai, with both the Mumbai Metro and local train services experiencing disruptions. Metro services were suspended between Aarey and Andheri East metro stations after a banner landed on the overhead wire due to strong winds, as confirmed by a Metro Rail spokesperson.

Similarly, local train services were affected after an overhead equipment pole between Thane and Mulund stations got bent due to strong winds, according to an official statement. Suburban services on the Main Line were also suspended, further compounding the transportation woes in the city. The dust storm and rain garnered significant attention on social media platforms, becoming trending topics on X (formerly Twitter) and Google, with users sharing photos and videos capturing the chaotic weather conditions in the city. Many individuals expressed relief from the scorching summer heat brought about by the rain, highlighting the mixed reactions to the unexpected weather phenomenon in Mumbai.
