Kargil Vijay Diwas Rajat Jayanti 2024 Bring Celebrated At Air Force Station Sarsawa.

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) proudly honors its legacy of bravery and sacrifice demonstrated by its valiant air warriors during the 1999 Kargil War, a significant milestone in military aviation history. The IAF's operations in the Kargil War, known as Op Safed Sagar, showcased its ability to overcome the formidable challenges posed by steep gradients and altitudes exceeding 16,000 feet, which presented unique operational difficulties. Swift technical modifications and on-the-job training were crucial for the IAF's successful use of air power in this high-altitude conflict. The IAF executed approximately 5,000 strike missions, 350 reconnaissance/ELINT missions, and around 800 escort flights. Additionally, over 2,000 helicopter sorties were flown for casualty evacuations and air transport operations.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Kargil victory, the IAF is celebrating 'Kargil Vijay Diwas Rajat Jayanti' at Air Force Station Sarsawa from July 12 to July 26, 2024, honoring the brave hearts who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. The 152 Helicopter Unit, 'The Mighty Armour,' of Air Force Station Sarsawa played a pivotal role during Op Safed Sagar. On May 28, 1999, Squadron Leader R. Pundir, Flight Lieutenant S. Muhilan, Sergeant PVNR Prasad, and Sergeant RK Sahu of the 152 HU were tasked with flying as the 'Nubra' formation for a live strike against enemy positions at Tololing. Their helicopter was hit by an enemy Stinger Missile during the breakaway, resulting in the loss of four precious lives. For their exceptional courage, they were posthumously awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry). Their supreme sacrifice ensures that their names remain etched in the history of the IAF forever.

On July 13, 2024, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, along with senior dignitaries, families of the brave hearts, veterans, and serving IAF officers, laid a wreath at the Station War Memorial to honor all air warriors who laid down their lives in service to the nation. The CAS also interacted with and felicitated the next-of-kin during the event.

The event featured a spectacular air show, including displays by the Akash Ganga Team and aerial performances by Jaguar, Su-30 MKI, and Rafale fighter aircraft. A "Missing Man formation" was flown by Mi-17 V5 helicopters in memory of the fallen heroes. Additionally, a static display of IAF helicopters, including the Mi-17 V5, Cheetah, and Chinook, was organized along with performances by the Air Warrior Drill Team and the Air Force Band. The event was attended by over 5,000 spectators, including school children, local residents of the Saharanpur area, veterans, civil dignitaries, and personnel from Defense Forces establishments in Roorkee, Dehradun, and Ambala.
