Kolkata doctor rape-murder case live updates: Mamata Banerjee writes to PM Modi over ‘increasing rape cases’

In the ongoing legal proceedings related to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Supreme Court has taken several significant steps to ensure justice and maintain order in the medical community. The case, which has garnered widespread attention, has also sparked protests and strikes among medical professionals across the country.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court convened to hear various pleas associated with the case. The session included a review of the case status report, which was submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a sealed cover. The report detailed the current status of the investigation and highlighted concerns about delays and possible obstructions in the filing of the First Information Report (FIR) by the college authorities. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) questioned why the FIR was lodged almost 14 hours after the crime was committed and raised concerns about the actions of the college principal, asking, “Why did the principal not come to college straight and file the FIR? Whom was he protecting?”

The Supreme Court has also issued directives to the Union Health Secretary, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of doctors who are willing to return to work amid the ongoing turmoil. This directive comes in the wake of escalating tensions within the medical community, where many doctors have been hesitant to resume duties due to concerns over their safety. The Court's intervention is seen as a critical step in addressing these fears and ensuring that healthcare services continue uninterrupted.

The Court’s directive also extends to all states and Union Territories, urging them to take preventive measures against violence in medical establishments. This comes as a response to the rising number of incidents where healthcare professionals have faced threats and attacks, leading to widespread concern within the medical fraternity.

In Delhi, doctors from RML College issued a statement confirming their decision to resume duties, following the Supreme Court’s appeal. Similarly, the General Secretary of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) at AIIMS, Delhi, expressed relief at the Court's intervention, stating, “The Court provided us with some relief.” The doctors at AIIMS, who had been on an 11-day strike, decided to call off their protest after the Supreme Court's assurance of safety measures.

Meanwhile, political reactions to the case have been intense. In West Bengal, BJP leaders have staged protests, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The protests highlight the political sensitivity of the case, which has become a flashpoint for broader discussions about law and order in the state. The Chief Minister’s chief advisor has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing concern over the increasing number of rape cases across the country and urging the central government to take stronger action.

Junior doctors, who have been at the forefront of the protests, have welcomed the Supreme Court’s intervention. One junior doctor remarked, “The SC heard our voice, and it will have good results.” Their sentiments reflect the widespread relief within the medical community that the highest court in the country is taking their concerns seriously.

The CBI, continuing its investigation, has approached the court for permission to conduct a polygraph test on certain individuals related to the case. This request indicates that the investigation is ongoing and that further steps are being taken to uncover the truth behind the tragic incident.

As the case progresses, the Supreme Court has scheduled the next hearing for September 5. Until then, the directives issued by the Court are expected to play a crucial role in stabilizing the situation and ensuring that justice is served while maintaining the safety and security of healthcare professionals across the country.

The Kolkata doctor rape-murder case has not only shaken the medical community but also raised important questions about safety, accountability, and the role of law enforcement in protecting vulnerable individuals. The Supreme Court's proactive stance in this case is a significant development, offering hope for a resolution that prioritizes both justice for the victim and the safety of those who serve in the medical profession.
