Nepal accident: 27 Indian tourists killed, 16 injured after bus falls into river.

At least 27 Indian nationals were killed and another 16 injured when a bus carrying tourists veered off a Nepali highway and plunged into a river on Friday. The victims, primarily from Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, were on a pilgrimage when their bus fell into the swiftly flowing Marsyangdi River after leaving the highway. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, "We are deeply pained by the tragic death of 27 Indian nationals in a road accident in Tanahun district of Nepal. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased." The ministry also confirmed that the 16 injured individuals have been airlifted to Kathmandu for medical care.

The bus was traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu and had 43 passengers on board when the accident occurred. Nepalese authorities, with assistance from local rescue teams, faced significant difficulties in rescuing survivors and recovering the bodies from the turbulent river currents.

The Maharashtra government identified the deceased as Ramjeet alias Munna, Sarla Rane (42), Bharti Jawade (62), Tulshiram Tawade (62), Sarla Tawade (62), Sandeep Sarode (45), Pallavi Sarode (43), Anup Sarode (22), Ganesh Bharambe (40), Nilima Dhande (57), Pankaj Bhangade (45), Pari Bharambe (8), Anita Patil, Vijaya Jhawade (50), Rohini Jhawade (51), and Prakash Kodi. The Indian Embassy has established emergency helplines to assist with communication and support, and is coordinating with local authorities to expedite the return of the deceased to India. “We are in constant contact with local authorities and affected families, and we are making arrangements for the prompt transportation of the mortal remains to India. We will provide regular updates on the situation,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

This tragic event follows a recent fatal accident in Nepal where two buses with 59 passengers were swept into a river by a landslide in Chitwan district. Only three survivors were found, and authorities have so far recovered 20 bodies, with searches ongoing for the missing passengers and buses. The risk of deadly road accidents in Nepal increases during the monsoon season due to landslides and flooding.
