Actor Mohanlal resigns as AMMA president, executive committee dissolved.
Actor Mohanlal resigned as president of AMMA, which dissolved its executive committee amid sexual assault allegations against members Siddique and Baburaj.
Actor Mohanlal has stepped down as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), and the association's executive committee was dissolved on Tuesday. This move follows sexual assault allegations against several members, including actors Siddique and Baburaj, who held the positions of general secretary and joint secretary, respectively. AMMA announced that a new committee will be established through elections in two months. Siddique resigned from his position on Sunday following allegations of sexual assault by a female actor, while Baburaj, accused of assault by a junior actor, remains in his role and has denied the claims.
AMMA, a prominent organization within the Malayalam film industry, and its executive committee have faced significant criticism for failing to act on the findings of the Justice Hema committee report. This report highlighted systemic sexual abuse of women actors, the dominance of a powerful group within the industry, and inadequate treatment of junior actors. Siddique, before his resignation, had previously denied the existence of a “casting couch” in the industry and referred to the issues as “isolated incidents” of harassment.
The resignations came a day after leading actor Prithviraj Sukumaran acknowledged that AMMA had failed to address the report's findings effectively.
