A man in Ladakh shaved his head outside a police station to protest the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk.

On Wednesday, a supporter of Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk shaved his head outside a police station in Delhi to symbolically protest the detention of Wangchuk and 150 other demonstrators. "My name is Hassan Tamanna, and I'm from Kargil. I joined Sonam Wangchuk's padyatra," Tamanna said in a video shared by PTI. "Seeing how democracy has been stifled following their detention has compelled me to shave my head in protest." In the video, Tamanna is shown trimming his hair while holding a poster that reads, “Why are Ladakhis denied peaceful protest for their rights in Indian democracy?” He staged the protest in front of the Bawana police station, where Wangchuk and several activists have been held since their arrest on Monday.

The protest follows the detention of Wangchuk and others participating in the 'Delhi Chalo Padyatra,' a month-long march from Leh to Delhi aimed at demanding statehood for Ladakh, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, and other regional rights. Wangchuk, known for his environmental activism, and his supporters have been on an indefinite fast since Gandhi Jayanti, the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's birth on October 2. Jigmat Paljor, Coordinator of the Apex Body, stated that the detainees had been held for over 24 hours, which he described as illegal. "We, the 'padyatris', find ourselves in a concerning situation," Paljor said. "Last night, police attempted to forcibly relocate us to an unknown location, but we stood our ground in resistance."

Delhi Police reported that the protesters were initially released on Tuesday night but were re-detained when they attempted to march toward central Delhi.

The Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance are leading the push for Ladakhi rights, advocating for statehood and separate Lok Sabha seats for the Leh and Kargil districts.

Wangchuk and his fellow protesters are currently being held at various police stations across Delhi, where they continue their fast in defiance of police actions.
