The country's coal imports rose by 4.2%, reaching 162.45 million tonnes (MT) in the April-October period of the current financial year, compared to 155.87 MT during the same period last year. However, coal imports in October fell by 14.4%, totaling 21.84 MT, down from 25.54 MT in the same month of the previous fiscal year, according to data from mjunction services, a B2B e-commerce platform.
Of the total imports in October, non-coking coal amounted to 13.49 MT, down from 18.82 MT in October of the previous year. Coking coal imports stood at 4.45 MT, slightly up from 4.31 MT during the same month last year.
In September, non-coking coal imports were 13.24 MT, and coking coal imports were 3.39 MT. "There was a slight increase in non-coking coal volumes in October as buyers made new purchases during the festive season and in preparation for winter. Going forward, demand is expected to be moderate due to anticipated growth in domestic supply during the fourth quarter (Q4)," said Vinaya Varma, MD & CEO of mjunction.
Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy recently urged the steel sector to reduce its reliance on imported coal and adopt necessary technological changes. He emphasized that coal imports should be gradually reduced, noting that the steel industry primarily uses coking coal. The minister also expressed confidence that the coal production target of 1,080 million tonnes for the current fiscal year would be achieved.
