Qatar agrees to India's plea against the death penalty for eight navy veterans.
New Delhi: court in Qatar has accepted India's plea against the death penalty for eight former Indian Navy personnel, who were sentenced last month in an alleged espionage case. Sources indicate that the Qatari court will schedule a hearing after reviewing the appeal.
Reports suggest that the eight individuals were detained in August 2022 by Qatar's intelligence agency on charges of spying. However, the specific charges have not been made public by Qatari authorities. Despite multiple bail petitions being rejected, the verdict was delivered last month by the Court of First Instance in Qatar.
Consular access has been granted to the detained individuals, and Indian authorities are actively working to secure their release. The Ministry of External Affairs has urged caution against engaging in speculation due to the sensitive nature of the case.
The Indian Navy veterans under arrest include Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, and Sailor Ragesh Gopakumar.
