Cricketing Tribute: BCCI Reportedly Set to Retire MS Dhoni's Iconic No. 7 Jersey
BCCI retires MS Dhoni's iconic No. 7 jersey as a tribute, disallowing new players to choose it. Similar to Tendulkar's No. 10 retired in 2017.
The iconic No. 7 jersey worn by the legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni is set to be retired by the BCCI in honour of one of the greatest captains in the history of the game. Throughout his illustrious 15-year international career, Dhoni popularized the No. 7 shirt, leading India to victories in the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013, in addition to securing a couple of Test maces.
As per a report in the Indian Express, over three years after Dhoni retired from international cricket, the BCCI has chosen to 'retire' the number 7 jersey worn by the 42-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman as a tribute to his significant contributions to the sport. The board has communicated to national team players, particularly debutants, that they are not permitted to choose jersey numbers associated with Tendulkar and Dhoni. In 2017, before Dhoni, the BCCI had also retired Tendulkar’s iconic No. 10 jersey.
A senior Board official stated, “The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick MS Dhoni’s Number 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni’s t-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can’t get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers.”
