‘Biggest scam in India’s history': RBI, HDFC, ICICI banks receive threat emails; probe underway

On Tuesday, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), headquartered in Mumbai, along with two private sector banks based in the city, HDFC and ICICI, received threatening emails. The sender accused the RBI and private sector banks of orchestrating the 'biggest scam in the history of India' and claimed to have planted bombs at 11 locations across Mumbai, as reported by Mint, citing the Mumbai Police.

The sender demanded the resignation of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, among others, alleging their 'involvement' in the purported 'scam.'

According to Mint, the emails stated, "We demand that both RBI Governor and Finance Minister immediately resign from their posts and release a press statement with a full disclosure of the scam. We also demand the government to give them both and all those who are involved the punishment they deserve."

The threatening emails prompted a response from the Mumbai Police, which initiated an investigation into the matter. Security measures were heightened, and bomb disposal squads were deployed to inspect the specified locations mentioned in the emails.

The incident adds to the growing list of cybersecurity threats faced by financial institutions globally. While the authenticity of the threats remains uncertain, authorities take such communications seriously and follow strict protocols to ensure public safety.

It's crucial for financial institutions and government bodies to continually strengthen their cybersecurity measures to thwart potential threats. Cybersecurity awareness, employee training, and the implementation of robust protective measures are essential components of safeguarding against cyber threats and maintaining the integrity of financial systems.

As investigations unfold, it will become clearer whether the threats were genuine or part of a malicious attempt to disrupt operations and instil fear. The incident serves as a reminder of the persistent need for vigilance and proactive cybersecurity measures in the face of evolving threats in the digital age.
