India registers 109 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1. Which states reported the highest infections? Lets know.
India registered an additional 40 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant of COVID-19 by December 26, bringing the total count to 109, according to official sources on Wednesday. As per the news agency PTI, Gujarat recorded 36 cases, Karnataka reported 34, Goa identified 14 cases, Maharashtra documented nine cases, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu each reported four cases, and Telangana reported two infections.
Most patients were placed in home isolation, according to sources. Dr V K Paul, NITI Aayog member (Health), mentioned last week that authorities were closely examining the new variant. He emphasized the need for states to enhance testing and reinforce the surveillance system.
Despite the rise in cases and the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant, officials stress there is no immediate cause for concern. Ninety-two per cent of those infected have opted for home-based treatment, indicating a mild illness. Officials have not observed an uptick in hospitalization rates, and the identification of COVID-19 in hospitalized individuals for other medical conditions is deemed coincidental.
Union health secretary Sudhansh Pant urged states and union territories to implement essential public health measures, underscoring the importance of COVID-19 control and management strategies. States were directed to ensure the effective execution of operational guidelines for the revised surveillance strategy for COVID-19, per the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Continuous monitoring and reporting of district-wise cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) in health facilities have been mandated to detect any emerging trends in cases early.
India reported a daily increase of 529 COVID-19 cases, with 4,093 active cases, as of Wednesday, according to the health ministry. In the past 24 hours, three new fatalities were reported, with two in Karnataka and one in Gujarat. The JN.1 (BA.2.86.1.1) variant, originating in Luxembourg in August 2023, is a descendant of the BA.2.86 lineage (Pirola) of SARS-CoV-2.
