The US supports India's defense modernization in the Indo-Pacific, deploying advanced military capabilities, and advancing cooperation under the US-India Defense Industrial Cooperation.
WASHINGTON: In a bid to uphold deterrence in the Indo-Pacific and aid India in enhancing its defence modernization plans, the United States is deploying state-of-the-art military capabilities to its allies.
The US Department of Defense has declared 2023 as a 'decisive year' and is actively supporting allies and partners as they invest in their capabilities. The release emphasized the reinforcement of India's defence modernization plans, including advancing priorities outlined in the Roadmap for US-India Defense Industrial Cooperation.
Under the US-India Defense Industrial Cooperation, the two nations will collaborate on co-producing fighter jet engines and Stryker armoured vehicles. Additionally, the India-US Defense Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) will be launched to foster partnerships between US and Indian researchers, entrepreneurs, and investors.
"The United States is joining together with Indo-Pacific allies and partners in ways that strengthen peace and security across the region, including by operating together like never before," the US Defense Department release stated.
It highlighted India's efforts to modernize its military engagements, incorporating advanced fighter aircraft and strategic bombers in exercises to strengthen interoperability and promote stability in the Indo-Pacific.
The Defense Department's year-ender fact sheet also spotlighted the US defence exercise MALABAR with India, Japan, and Australia. This exercise, hosted in Australia for the first time, facilitated high-end training in anti-submarine exercises, communications, and air defence.
The release emphasized the US's collaboration with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) through capacity-building programs, training courses to support Women, Peace, and Security principles, and an emerging leaders fellowship program for young civilian and defence leaders in the Indo-Pacific.

It further outlined the US's investment of over USD 1.2 billion in security cooperation initiatives across the Indo-Pacific region, constituting one of the largest US investments in history to strengthen partners' capability, capacity, maritime domain awareness, and resilience against coercion.
The US worked closely with allies and partners throughout 2023 to achieve groundbreaking results for peace, stability, and deterrence in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
As per Secretary Austin's statement, "In this decisive decade, 2023 will be remembered as a decisive year for implementing US defence strategy in Asia."
In the recently concluded India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering their multifaceted defence partnership. This commitment includes extensive dialogues, increasingly complex military exercises, and the acceleration of joint projects initiated under the June 2023 Roadmap for India-US Defense Industrial Cooperation.
The ministers commended the breadth of partnerships under the India-US Defense Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) since its launch in June 2023. They welcomed the INDUS-X Gurukul Education series and the joint challenges initiative, aiming to strengthen defence industry ecosystems.
The India-US 2+2 ministerial dialogue is an annual diplomatic summit, with the ministers of external affairs and defence representing India and the Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense representing the United States.
