UK: Storm Gerrit plunges thousands of homes into the dark

Storm Gerrit wreaked havoc across the UK during Christmas festivities, leaving thousands of homes in darkness, with many still lacking power as of Friday (Dec 29). A significant number of affected properties are situated in northern England and Scotland.

According to reports from various local media outlets, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) stated that power had been restored to hundreds of properties, and the situation was expected to further improve in the coming days.

The aftermath of Storm Gerrit continues to impact people in England and Wales. Local authorities in Greater Manchester areas like Stalybridge, Tameside, and Carrbrook have described the region as being in a "recovery phase." Storm Gerrit inflicted damage on homes and toppled trees in these areas. The damage in the Greater Manchester area is attributed to a supercell thunderstorm, leaving some homes in a state of "absolute disaster," as reported by residents to Sky News. Unfortunately, three individuals were reportedly killed near Glaisdale in the River Esk.

Similar to Scotland, tens of thousands of properties in Ceredigion were left without power following a lightning strike.

Storm Gerrit not only caused damage to property and loss of life but also led to disruptions in train and flight schedules. Ferry services between Dover and France experienced delays due to strong winds in the English Channel.

Sporting events were also affected, with a Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Ross County, as well as Aberdeen's top-flight game against Motherwell, being postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

The aftermath of the storm is expected to cause continued disruption to rail services for a few days, with efforts underway to clear blockages. The Guardian reported on Friday that significant disruptions might occur on the London Euston and Watford Junction line.

In Wales, rail services are anticipated to remain affected until Monday.
