Bangladesh's PM Sheikh Hasina hails India as a 'great friend' post-election win, emphasizing bilateral ties and resolved issues
On Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed that India is a valuable ally of Bangladesh, highlighting their strong bilateral relationship and successful resolution of various issues. This statement came a day after her resounding victory in the general elections, securing a historic fourth consecutive term.
The 76-year-old leader, who has led the South Asian nation since 2009, clinched her fifth overall term in the one-sided election marked by a low turnout on Sunday. Sheikh Hasina acknowledged India's steadfast friendship, citing support during critical moments such as the events of 1971 and 1975 when she sought refuge in the country after the assassination of her family members.
Referring to India as a close neighbour, she emphasized the successful resolution of bilateral issues through mutual dialogue. Expressing gratitude for the strong ties, she stated, "We consider India as our next-door neighbour. We faced many challenges, but we resolved them through bilateral discussions. I truly value the excellent relationship we share with India."
Responding to a question, she affirmed having positive relationships with every country, emphasizing that maintaining good international relations is a priority for her government. Looking ahead, she outlined the primary focus of her administration in the next five years, emphasizing economic progress.
She reiterated her commitment to serving the people and expressed gratitude for the continued support she has received through multiple elections. She characterized her leadership style as one driven by maternal care, stating, "With motherly affection, I look after my people who have given me this opportunity. Time and again, people have voted for me, and that is why I am here."
Comparing herself to renowned global leaders like former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Sri Lanka's former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Sheikh Hasina humbly stated, "They are very great ladies. I am not. I am very simple, just a common person."
