Taiwan's de facto ambassador to US meets US House speaker

On Tuesday, Taiwan's de facto ambassador to the United States, Alexander Yui, held a meeting with U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson, as reported by Taiwan's foreign ministry on Wednesday. Despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Taiwan, the United States remains a crucial ally and arms supplier for the island, a fact that China vehemently opposes, considering Taiwan as its territory.

Alexander Yui assumed his role as the de facto ambassador last month, succeeding Hsiao Bi-khim, who is currently running for vice president in Taiwan's upcoming elections scheduled for Saturday. The foreign ministry of Taiwan conveyed Yui's gratitude to the U.S. Congress for its enduring bipartisan support and commitment to enhancing Taiwan's defence capabilities. The meeting between Yui and Speaker Johnson marks their first interaction.

Notably, China conducted military exercises around Taiwan in August 2022, following a visit to Taipei by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The geopolitical dynamics in the region continue to be complex, with Taiwan seeking to strengthen its international relationships, particularly with the U.S., in the face of China's opposition and territorial claims.
