China races to find landslide survivors in sub-zero temperatures

Rescue operations have intensified in southwestern Yunnan, China, as teams work against time to locate dozens buried in a landslide. The disaster struck two villages in mountainous Zhengxiong County, burying 18 homes and at least 47 people while they slept. Nine people have been confirmed dead, and two survivors were rescued. President Xi Jinping has called for all-out rescue efforts. The affected area, known for its steep, rugged mountains, has faced sub-zero temperatures. The landslide resulted from a collapse in the cliff area atop the slope, according to Wu Junyao, director of the Natural Resources and Planning Bureau of Zhaotong. Hundreds of rescue workers, including soldiers, are involved in the operation. Yunnan is currently experiencing bitterly cold temperatures. Last week, avalanches triggered by heavy snow trapped over 1,000 people in a remote skiing area in northwestern China. The avalanches blocked roads, stranding tourists and residents for a week. No immediate explanation has been provided for the cause of the landslide in Zhengxiong County. Landslides, often triggered by rain or unsafe construction, are not uncommon in China, with at least 70 people killed in landslides the previous year, including over 50 at an open-pit mine in the Inner Mongolia region.
