Karnataka news: Section 144 imposed after quarrel during Lord Ram idol procession in Kalaburagi
After Ram Temple inauguration, Karnataka imposes Section 144 post Lord Ram procession quarrel. Tensions persist over alleged Ambedkar statue defacement.
A day after the grand inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, the Karnataka government took precautionary measures by imposing prohibitory orders in Kalaburagi district. The decision came in the aftermath of a quarrel during a Lord Ram idol procession at Wadi town.
Prohibitory orders under CrPC Section 144 were enforced and are set to remain in effect until 6 am on January 25. The police, considering the potential for unrest, issued these orders to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents. The quarrel erupted during the procession and reportedly involved stone-pelting between two groups.
In response, the police intervened and employed 'mild' force to disperse the crowd. The procession was organized to celebrate the consecration of the Lord Ram idol at the newly inaugurated Ram Temple in Ayodhya. While the situation was swiftly brought under control, the prohibitory orders were implemented as a precautionary measure in the Wadi area of Chittapur taluk.
A senior police officer clarified that it was primarily a quarrel, an escalated heated argument, and reassured that there was no lingering tension in the area. The prohibitory orders, however, will remain in effect until January 25, serving as a preventive measure to ensure the continued peace and security of the region.
Simultaneously, tension persisted in various parts of the district on Tuesday as Dalit organizations staged protests condemning the alleged defacement of a Dr BR Ambedkar statue at Kotnoor village on the outskirts of Kalaburagi city. Protesters claimed miscreants had garlanded the Ambedkar statue with footwear, demanding strict action against the perpetrators.
A police officer assured that efforts are underway to identify the culprits, and appropriate legal action will be taken against those involved in the alleged act. The incident occurred late on Monday night, but prompt action by the police ensured the situation was swiftly brought under control.
The developments highlight the delicate balance between maintaining law and order, religious celebrations, and addressing community grievances, underscoring the ongoing need for vigilance and effective governance in the region.
