Air India fined 1.10 crore by DGCA for safety violations

Air India faces a substantial ₹1.10 crore fine for safety violations following a series of flight irregularities. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) disclosed that these violations occurred on specific long-range routes critical for terrain. A former Air India pilot and B777 commander reported these concerns to the civil aviation ministry and DGCA in October of the previous year.

DGCA's comprehensive investigation revealed prima facie non-compliance by the airline, prompting a Show Cause Notice to Air India's Accountable Manager. The airline disagreed with DGCA's order, asserting that their internal examination, alongside external experts, found no compromise on safety. Air India is contemplating its options, including the right to appeal and raise the matter with the regulator.

This fine follows a recent penalty of ₹1.20 crore imposed on IndiGo after passengers exited one of its flights onto the tarmac to consume food. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia strongly condemned the incident, deeming it unacceptable.

Addressing broader challenges in aviation, Scindia commented on fog-related disruptions causing delays and cancellations at various airports. While acknowledging the impact of weather on operations, he emphasized the ministry's commitment to safety. The disruptions due to fog led to chaos at several airports.

Scindia noted that unforeseen events like adverse weather affect aviation globally, with base stations serving as critical points in the civil aviation ecosystem. When a base station is affected, it triggers a chain of delays and cancellations throughout the system. Despite these challenges, Scindia reiterated that safety remains the ministry's top priority.

In response to the fine, Air India stated its disagreement with DGCA's order and expressed its commitment to safety protocols. The airline is carefully examining the order and considering potential actions, including an appeal.

The aviation sector, grappling with safety concerns and operational challenges, underscores the need for stringent regulatory measures to maintain passenger safety and uphold industry standards.
