Nitish Kumar's "My Brother" Jab At BJP Over Karpoori Thakur's Bharat Ratna
Karpoori Thakur, born on January 24, 1924, and who died on February 17, 1988, was the first non-Congress socialist leader to become Chief Minister of Bihar; he served twice - for seven months in 1970/71 and for two years from 1977.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, on the occasion of Karpoori Thakur's birth anniversary, took a jab at the ruling BJP over the posthumous Bharat Ratna awarded to the late ex-Bihar Chief Minister. Nitish Kumar, standing alongside Thakur's son Ram Nath, emphasized that the JDU had been demanding Bharat Ratna for Karpoori Thakur since he died in 1988. He praised Thakur's efforts for the upliftment of all sections of society and mentioned the JDU's long-standing campaign for the honour.
Taking a swipe at the BJP, Nitish Kumar pointed out that while Karpoori Thakur did not make his son his successor, Nitish Kumar referred to Ram Nath as "my brother," highlighting his ministerial role from 2005 to 2010 and his current position in the Rajya Sabha. Nitish Kumar also expressed expectations that Prime Minister Narendra Mod might claim full credit for the award.
Lalu Prasad Yadav, another political figure associated with Karpoori Thakur, remarked that the recognition should have come earlier. He linked the timing of the award to the Bihar government's recent controversial caste survey, suggesting the centre responded only after increased focus on backward and extremely backward classes.
Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu Yadav's son and Deputy Chief Minister, criticized the BJP-led centre. Rahul Gandhi from the Congress welcomed the award but called for a true tribute through a national caste census by the BJP.
