Live updates on the 2024 Lok Sabha Election: Active campaigning marks the lead-up to the forthcoming general elections, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing election rallies in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan today. The Congress unveiled its election manifesto on April 5 at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) office in New Delhi. Setting ambitious goals, the BJP, having secured parliamentary majorities in the two preceding general elections—282 seats in 2014 and 303 in 2019—aims to clinch 370 seats independently and surpass 400 with coalition partners. PM Modi aims for a third consecutive victory in the prime ministerial race. In a bid to enhance their electoral prospects, the Congress and allied opposition parties have forged the INDIA bloc. The Congress, historically dominant, secured only 44 and 52 seats in the 2014 and 2019 elections, respectively.
The Lok Sabha elections will be conducted in seven phases, commencing on April 19. In addition to electing representatives for the 543 Lok Sabha seats, the Election Commission of India has scheduled assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Odisha, along with by-polls for 26 vacant assembly seats.
Vote tabulation is slated for June 4, requiring a minimum of 272 MPs in the Lok Sabha to form a government at the Centre.
