Philippines wards off cyber attacks from China-based hackers

In the recent cyber incidents, hackers from China targeted the Philippines' president and government sites, including the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the National Coast Watch website. Despite attempting to breach these systems in January, the hacking endeavours were unsuccessful. Renato Paraiso, a spokesperson for DICT, disclosed that while the Philippines is not directly attributing the attacks to any state, the internet protocol addresses led to the identification of China as the source, specifically traced to the services of Chinese state-owned Unicom. The Philippine government has appealed to China for assistance in preventing future cyber attacks.

The thwarted hacking attempts occurred amid heightened tensions between the two nations, particularly concerning disputed territory in the South China Sea. As a response to evolving cyber threats, the Philippines is actively developing a five-year cybersecurity strategy to fortify its defences against digital attacks and crimes. Additionally, the country's military announced the establishment of a cyber command last year to enhance its capabilities in the cyber domain. Unicom and the Chinese embassy in Manila have not provided immediate comments on the matter.
