Stock Market Today: World Shares Are Mixed as Chinese Markets Reopen After the Lunar New Year

European shares experienced a decline following a varied session in Asia, with Chinese markets resuming activity after an extended Lunar New Year break. U.S. futures saw a slight rise, contrasting with a dip in oil prices. The United States observed a market closure on Monday for President's Day.

Germany's DAX retreated by 0.4% to 17,056.23, and Paris's CAC 40 lost 0.5%, settling at 7,729.47. London's FTSE 100 also dipped by 0.1%, closing at 7,705.28.

In Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng witnessed a 1.1% decline, closing at 16,155.61. The drop was attributed to substantial selling in technology and property shares, despite several Chinese state banks announcing plans for multi-billion-dollar loans for property projects. Notably, major developer Country Garden saw a 4.2% decrease, while Sino-Ocean Group Holding experienced a sharp 3.9% plunge. China Vanke also recorded a 3.8% loss.

As markets grapple with varying performances globally, the mixed dynamics in Europe and Asia indicate ongoing economic uncertainties and shifting investor sentiments. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the closure for President's Day contributes to a subdued start to the trading week, with futures showing only marginal gains. Oil prices, in tandem with these trends, display a decline in this session.
