RO must be prosecuted’: SC seeks Chandigarh mayoral poll ballots
Supreme Court demands Chandigarh mayoral poll ballots; calls for prosecution of Returning Officer (RO) over alleged irregularities in electoral process.
The Supreme Court, on Monday, asserted that Anil Masih, the returning officer (RO) for the January 30 Chandigarh mayoral polls, "must be prosecuted for interfering with the election process." The court called for the submission of ballot papers used in the election, demanding that a judicial officer from Punjab provide them by 2 pm on Tuesday. The ruling specified that Masih must be present in court during the submission, as directed by a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. Masih attended the hearing on the apex court's orders.
The bench, including Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, expressed concern that the RO had "defaced the ballot papers," deeming it a serious matter. The Chief Justice questioned Masih's actions, referring to a viral video from the House and asking, "Why were you looking into the camera and putting marks on the ballot paper?" The court's intervention highlights the significance of maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, and the call for Masih's prosecution underscores the gravity of the alleged interference. The directive for the submission of ballot papers reflects the court's commitment to a thorough examination of the matter.
