Electoral bonds: Supreme Court takes exception to SBI not furnishing unique numbers
SC slams SBI for not giving full details of electoral bonds to ECI. Hearing on Monday to understand why unique bond numbers withheld. #ElectoralBonds #Transparency
The Supreme Court (SC) approved the Election Commission of India's (ECI) request to retrieve electoral bond data for publication on their website. However, the court criticized the State Bank of India (SBI) for failing to disclose crucial information - the unique bond numbers.
A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, which also included three judges from the UK Supreme Court, expressed their disapproval of SBI's incomplete data submission. The SC's previous order, issued on March 12th, clearly mandated the bank to provide all electoral bond details to the ECI. While SBI met the deadline, they omitted the unique numbers identifying each bond.
The court directed the Supreme Court registrar to oversee the scanning and digitization of the documents. Once complete, the originals will be returned to the ECI for website upload by March 17th. Additionally, the SC issued a notice to SBI and scheduled a hearing for Monday. The bank will be required to explain why they withheld the alphanumeric codes despite the court's order for full disclosure of all electoral bond information.
