US Congress Averts Government Shutdown, Passing $1.2 Trillion Bill

The U.S. Congress passed a $1.2 trillion budget bill, averting a partial government shutdown and funding key federal agencies through September 30. President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill into law. Notably, the bill did not include funding for military aid to Ukraine, Taiwan, or Israel, which are part of a separate Senate-passed bill awaiting action in the House of Representatives.

Despite bipartisan support for the budget bill, deep partisan divides were evident, particularly within the Republican Party. Conservative Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene threatened to challenge Speaker Mike Johnson over the bill's passage, showcasing internal discord.

The bill allocates $886 billion to the Defense Department, including pay raises for U.S. troops. While some senators praised the bill as a national security measure, opponents criticized its cost and potential impact on inflation.

The last government shutdown occurred during Donald Trump's presidency in 2018-2019 over funding for a border wall. Greene's attempt to oust Speaker Johnson echoes past party divisions, but she indicated it was more of a warning than an immediate action. Democrats signaled a willingness to support Johnson to secure funding for security assistance packages for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan
