On Sunday, President Droupadi Murmu awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor in the country, to L K Advani, a prominent figure in the Bharatiya Janata Party and former deputy prime minister, at his residence. The event was attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Advani's family members, according to a statement from the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
President Murmu personally presented the Bharat Ratna to Advani at his residence, the statement noted. Advani, a veteran of Indian politics, has dedicated over seven decades to serving the nation with remarkable commitment and distinction, as highlighted by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Born in Karachi in 1927, Advani migrated to India in 1947 amidst the partition. Embracing a vision of cultural nationalism, he tirelessly worked across the country for many years, significantly influencing the socio-political landscape, the Rashtrapati Bhavan remarked.
During the Emergency period, when India's democracy faced serious threats, Advani's relentless advocacy played a crucial role in safeguarding it against authoritarian tendencies, the statement added. The Rashtrapati Bhavan also shared images of the ceremony along with these remarks. Advani, now 96, served as deputy prime minister from June 2002 to May 2004 and as Union Home Minister from October 1999 to May 2004. He held the position of BJP president multiple times, from 1986 to 1990, 1993 to 1998, and 2004 to 2005.
