'Even if 1% is true, it is absolutely shameful': Calcutta HC on Sandeshkhali incident.

Expressing vehement disapproval of the contents of an affidavit presented alleging sexual violence against women in Sandeshkhali, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday emphatically stated that if even a fraction of the case were true, it would be utterly disgraceful, as reported by Live Law.

Furthermore, the court rebuked the West Bengal government for its assertion that it is the safest place for women.

During the hearing on requests for an independent investigation into reported instances of violence against women and land seizures in Sandeshkhali, Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam remarked, "The entire district administration and ruling establishment must bear a moral obligation. Even if just 1% of the affidavit is accurate, it is utterly shameful. And West Bengal claims to be the safest for women? If a single affidavit proves true, all such claims collapse." The court has postponed its decision on the petitions.

In February, the high court had taken suo motu notice of allegations of sexual assault on women "at gunpoint" and of the purported transfer of tribal land in Sandeshkhali. In March, it directed the transfer of the investigation into the January 5 assault on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali, as well as the custody of the main accused, Shahjahan Sheikh, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The sequence of events unfolded when ED officials, conducting a raid on Shahjahan Sheikh, a powerful zilla parishad member of the TMC who has since been suspended, were attacked in Sandeshkhali on January 5. As Shahjahan and his associates remained at large, on February 8, women in the area, including Patra, took to the streets, accusing local TMC leaders of sexual harassment, assault, and land seizure. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has criticized the BJP, alleging that the opposition party is spreading false information about the Sandeshkhali issue. Additionally, challenging the BJP, Mamata asserted that women are safest in Bengal.
