A case of molestation was registered against NIA officers after the attack in East Medinipur, Bengal.

Shortly after a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team probing the 2022 explosion in East Medinipur, West Bengal, was assaulted on Saturday, local police filed charges of molestation against them.

The East Midnapore police lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the NIA personnel, citing sections 354 (molestation) and 441 (trespassing) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Bhupatinagar police station on Saturday night. The FIR stemmed from complaints lodged by family members of the detained suspects and TMC worker Manabroto Jana, as per police sources. Allegations surfaced that NIA officials, breaking into homes late at night, had molested women.

On the same day, the NIA filed a formal complaint regarding the assault at the Bhupatinagar police station. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident yet. The attack on the NIA team occurred in Bhupatinagar after they detained two TMC workers linked to the December 3, 2022 blast that claimed three lives. Two NIA officers sustained minor injuries when their vehicle was allegedly targeted following the detention of Balai Maiti and Manobrata Jana, identified as key conspirators. The situation sparked a political dispute involving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the CPI(M), and the Trinamool Congress, with opposition leaders drawing parallels with the January 5 Sandeshkhali incident in North 24 Parganas, where supporters of now-incarcerated TMC leader Shahzahan Sheikh assaulted Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials.

BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya condemned the booking of NIA officials on molestation charges, characterizing it as an attack on the Indian Constitution. CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty criticized the state government for not apprehending those involved in the attack on the NIA team while targeting the agency instead. Chakraborty referenced Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks at an election rally in Balurghat, asserting that the NIA's actions provoked the response and accusing the BJP of attempting to detain their booth presidents.
