Indian student Mohammad Abdul Arfath, who went missing last month, found dead in the US
Indian student Arfath, studying in the US, kidnapped for ransom, found dead. Indian consulate aiding in repatriation. Concerns over safety of Indian students abroad
The Indian consulate has stated that they are providing full support to the family of Arfath in arranging for his mortal remains to be transported back to India.
Arfath, aged 25, had come to the United States in May 2023 to pursue a Master’s degree in Information Technology at Cleveland University. He was reported missing around March 7, with his father losing contact with him since then, as his phone was switched off.
On March 19, Arfath's family received a ransom call, informing them that he had been kidnapped by a gang involved in drug trafficking. The caller demanded $1,200 for his release and threatened to sell his kidneys if the ransom was not paid.
Arfath's father received the call from an unknown number and was instructed to pay the ransom without specifying the mode of payment. When he requested to speak with his son, the caller refused.
The Indian consulate had announced on March 21 that they were collaborating with local law enforcement authorities to locate Arfath.
The family had also reached out to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urging him to assist in locating and repatriating Arfath to India.
This incident marks the 11th such case in the United States involving Indian or Indian-origin students. The recent death of Indian student Uma Satya Sai Gadde in Ohio has further raised concerns within the Indian-American community about the increasing number of attacks.
