BRS leader K Kavitha arrested by CBI in Tihar in Delhi excise policy case.

According to officials, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested K Kavitha, a prominent figure in the BRS party, on Thursday in relation to a corruption case associated with the now-defunct Delhi excise policy. Kavitha, who is the daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, was already in judicial custody at Delhi's Tihar jail following her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case connected to the same excise policy.

CBI officials recently interrogated Kavitha within the confines of the prison after receiving authorization from a special court. Reports indicate that the investigative agency questioned her regarding WhatsApp conversations retrieved from a co-accused's device and paperwork related to a land transaction, which purportedly indicated illicit payments made to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to sway the excise policy. On Tuesday, a Delhi court extended her judicial custody in the money laundering case by 14 days.

Earlier, the court had denied her interim bail on Monday, citing prima facie evidence demonstrating her active involvement in the alleged wrongdoing and her deliberate efforts to destroy evidence.

Special judge Kaveri Baweja stated in her ruling, "The evidence presented to this court during the proceedings indicates her direct participation in the alleged offenses as well as her intentional actions to destroy evidence, along with attempts to influence witnesses in the case." The primary accusation against Kavitha revolves around her purported association with the "South Group," which allegedly disbursed kickbacks totaling ₹100 crore to AAP officials in return for favorable treatment in securing retail zones under the 2021-22 excise policy.

Kavitha, aged 46, was apprehended by the ED from her residence in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, on March 15.
