‘Overspeeding’ truck plunges into a ravine killing 17 pilgrims in Pakistan

Tragedy struck as at least 17 pilgrims lost their lives and 38 sustained injuries in a devastating vehicular accident while en route to a shrine in southwestern Pakistan. The incident occurred around 10 pm on Wednesday in the Hub district of Balochistan province.

According to police reports on Thursday, the accident was attributed to the truck's overspeeding, causing the driver to lose control while navigating a turn, leading to the vehicle plunging into a ravine in a mountainous area near the shrine. The pilgrims were heading to the Shah Noorani Sufi shrine in Khuzdar city to observe Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan.

The district deputy commissioner, Munir Ahmed, confirmed the details, highlighting the tragic turn of events during the festive occasion. The driver, also injured, was detained by authorities for further investigation into the accident.

Shaukat Jalbani, the deputy medical superintendent of Hub's main hospital, corroborated the casualties, stating that most of the injured pilgrims were transferred to Karachi for medical treatment due to the severity of their injuries.

This incident underscores the pressing issue of road safety in Pakistan, where lax safety measures, inadequate driver training, and deteriorating transport infrastructure contribute to frequent accidents with high fatalities.

Past incidents serve as grim reminders of the country's road safety challenges. In January 2023, 41 individuals perished when a passenger bus, carrying containers of flammable oil, careened off a ravine in Balochistan province, erupting in flames upon impact. Additionally, in August of the same year, a train derailment in southern Sindh province claimed the lives of at least 30 people, underscoring the broader safety concerns within Pakistan's transportation network.

Moreover, in 2022, 22 passengers, including women and children, met a tragic end when a speeding van veered off a precarious mountain road and plunged into a ravine in Balochistan's vicinity of Quetta.

These recurring tragedies highlight the urgent need for comprehensive measures to improve road safety standards and enhance transport infrastructure to mitigate such catastrophic accidents in Pakistan.
