Sarabjit Singh's killer gunned down in Pakistan's Lahore

Amir Sarfaraz Tamba, a key figure in the case involving the brutal murder of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, met a violent end himself when he was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Lahore, Pakistan. The incident occurred in the city's Islampura area, where Tamba was attacked by assailants riding motorcycles. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, he succumbed to his injuries. Tamba's connection to the case stems from his alleged involvement in the murder of Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Bhikhiwind in Punjab, who had mistakenly crossed into Pakistan while inebriated. Singh was sentenced to death for his alleged role in bomb blasts in Pakistan's Punjab province in 1990, a charge consistently denied by the Indian government. While serving his sentence in Lahore's high-security Kot Lakhpat Jail, Singh was brutally assaulted by fellow inmates using bricks and rods.

He ultimately passed away in Jinnah Hospital Lahore on May 2, 2013, after being in a comatose state for nearly a week following the attack. The circumstances surrounding Singh's case were further complicated by the fact that Tamba and another individual, Mudassar, were acquitted by a Pakistani court six years before the recent incident. Their acquittal was based on what was deemed a 'lack of evidence', with all witnesses having turned hostile. Throughout Singh's two-decade-long incarceration in Pakistan, his sister Dalbir Kaur tirelessly fought for his release, maintaining that he was innocent and had mistakenly crossed the border.

Kaur's efforts to secure her brother's release were widely recognized, and she even travelled to Pakistan to see him. Sadly, Kaur passed away on June 26, 2022, and was cremated in Bhikhiwind. Her death marked the end of a long and arduous battle for justice for her brother, whose case remains a poignant reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by individuals caught in cross-border conflicts.
