Injured in Vijayawada, Jagan Halts Yatra; FIR Filed, CM's Security to be Reviewed
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy was injured by stones thrown at him during a bus yatra. An FIR has been filed, and security measures are being reviewed.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy decided to pause his state-wide bus yatra after sustaining injuries on Saturday night when stones were thrown at him. An FIR has been filed under charges of attempt to murder, and authorities are working to identify the perpetrators, with a focus on reviewing the CM's security detail. The incident occurred in Vijayawada while the CM's bus tour, named 'Memantha Siddam (We are Ready),' was passing through the Singhnagar area. Stones were hurled at Jagan while he was standing atop the bus. The attack also injured Vijayawada West MLA Vellampalli Srinivas Rao, who was beside the CM. Following the attack, both Jagan and MLA Rao received medical attention at Vijayawada Government Hospital. Jagan sustained a cut above his left eyebrow and received stitches. Despite the incident, they continued the bus yatra for approximately three more hours before stopping for the night. Jagan planned to rest on Sunday in Kesarapalli, Vijayawada, and resume the yatra on Monday morning.
The timing of the attack is significant, as it comes during the Chief Minister's 21-day campaign tour ahead of the simultaneous Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh scheduled for May 13. An FIR was registered at the Ajit Singh Nagar Police Station on Sunday morning after the police received the medical report from the hospital. The FIR was filed against unknown persons under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Police are examining CCTV footage, live coverage, and drone visuals, and questioning individuals in the area for leads. Leaders from Jagan's YSRCP have alleged that supporters of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) were responsible for the attack. YSRCP general secretary Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy condemned the incident, asserting that those responsible would not escape justice. This is not the first time Jagan has faced physical harm. In October 2018, he was injured when a waiter at a restaurant in Visakhapatnam airport attacked him with a small knife, causing cuts on his left arm.
