Air India planes flew over Iran before Israel attack; safety concerns raised.
Two Air India aircraft traversed Iranian-controlled airspace shortly before Iran's extensive aerial attack on Israel, potentially endangering the lives of numerous passengers and crew. Flight data from Flightradar24 revealed that Air India flights 116 and 131, travelling from New York to Mumbai and from Mumbai to London respectively on April 13 and April 14, flew over the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman amidst escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. Iran's military action, involving over 300 drones and missiles, was anticipated following heightened hostilities since April 1, marked by fighter jet strikes on a building associated with the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, Syria.
The spokesman for Air India emphasized the airline's unwavering commitment to passenger, crew, and aircraft safety, stating that flight operations are meticulously evaluated for risk regardless of airspace considerations. Addressing the specific instances cited, the spokesman clarified that Air India adamantly refutes any compromise on safety. Despite Iranian airspace being open to civilian air traffic without restrictions or NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) on April 13, Air India closely monitored the Middle East situation in consultation with safety organizations and regulatory bodies. As part of their risk assessment, select westbound flights were rerouted along alternative safe corridors, a precaution also taken by other airlines.
It's noteworthy that Air India was not the sole carrier utilizing Iranian airspace during this period. Airlines like Malaysia Airlines, Emirates, and Qatar Airways also flew over Iran on April 13. However, in response to escalating tensions, several global airlines began rerouting or cancelling flights on the weekend between Saturday and Sunday, as well as on Monday (April 15).
As a precautionary measure, Air India rerouted some flights on April 13. Flights 149 and 121 from Kochi to London Gatwick Airport and Delhi to Frankfurt took longer routes via Afghanistan. The rationale behind rerouting these specific flights while others traversed Iranian airspace remains unclear.
