IndiGo places first-ever widebody aircraft order for 30 Airbus A350 jets.
IndiGo orders 30 A350-900 jets from Airbus, eyeing global expansion.
IndiGo, India's leading airline in terms of market share, announced on Thursday that it has placed an order with Airbus for 30 A350-900 jets, marking its inaugural purchase of widebody aircraft.
In response to the booming demand for air travel in the post-pandemic era, especially within the rapidly expanding aviation market of India, domestic carriers are striving to keep up. This move by IndiGo, which commands a 60 percent share of India's domestic aviation market, aligns with its ambitious goal of doubling its capacity by the end of the decade and enhancing its network, particularly in international sectors. Pieter Elbers, the airline's CEO, stated that the introduction of the new fleet "will enable IndiGo to enter the next phase of establishing itself as one of the foremost global players in aviation."
While Airbus no longer discloses prices, estimates suggest that such a transaction could exceed $9 billion based on the last published catalogue rates in 2018. However, industry insiders note that actual sale prices often fall well below official figures, especially with bulk orders.
IndiGo has recently expanded its flight services to various destinations in Africa, West Asia, and Southeast Asia. Additionally, it is bolstering its presence in Europe through a codeshare partnership with seven carriers, including Turkish Airlines and KLM. The airline anticipates receiving deliveries of the A350s beginning in 2027 and plans to utilize Rolls Royce's Trent XWB engines.
Furthermore, IndiGo disclosed that it holds purchase rights for an additional 70 Airbus A350 family aircraft, as stated in a company announcement.
