Dimple Yadav, a three-time Member of Parliament and wife of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, is now gearing up for her fourth electoral battle, defending the family bastion of Mainpuri. Despite marrying into a political family in 1999, the 46-year-old didn't foresee herself venturing into politics, given her background in an army family. Her father was a Colonel in the Indian army, and her upbringing had little indication of a political career.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, she expressed her surprise at her journey into politics, saying, "Since I am from an army background, I never thought I'd be in politics." However, she noted that over time, she has embraced her role and grown into it. Reflecting on her evolution over the past 15 years, she chuckled, "I have grown in the last 15 years I think. Everybody grows with time. I can do much better now. I have become an extrovert, standing on a different pedestal."

Dimple Yadav has been intricately involved in nurturing the Mainpuri constituency since 2022 when she won a by-election following the demise of her father-in-law, Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was the sitting MP. Prior to her tenure in Mainpuri, she represented Kannauj twice, first in 2012 after her husband resigned to contest the assembly election.

This time around, as the Samajwadi Party sets its sights on 62 seats in Uttar Pradesh, Dimple Yadav's contest in Mainpuri takes on added significance. Uttar Pradesh holds immense importance in Indian politics due to its 80 parliamentary seats. The Samajwadi Party's alliance partner, the Congress, is contesting 17 seats, further underlining the critical nature of this state in the national political landscape.

In her campaign for Mainpuri, Dimple Yadav has found a new ally in her daughter, Aditi Yadav. Aditi, who is currently studying in London, is back home on a break and has enthusiastically joined her mother's team. The addition of Aditi to the campaign signals a generational shift and a blend of traditional and modern campaigning methods. With her daughter by her side, Dimple Yadav aims to strengthen her grassroots connect and appeal to the younger electorate.
