'Mountain Of Cash': PM Modi Reacts As ED Finds Rs 20 Crore From Man Linked to Jharkhand Minister's Secretary
Enforcement Directorate recovers Rs 20 crore cash from Jharkhand minister's aide; BJP alleges corruption, minister denies knowledge.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently announced the recovery of a substantial amount of "unaccounted" cash during searches of premises allegedly connected to Jharkhand Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam's Personal Secretary, Sanjiv Lal. Reports suggest that approximately Rs 20 crore cash was found in the possession of the household help of Sanjiv Lal, who serves as the Personal Secretary to Alamgir Alam, a 70-year-old Congress leader representing the Pakur seat in the Jharkhand assembly. Video footage from the search shows stacks of currency notes spread across a room believed to be used by the domestic help of Sanjiv Lal, the PS to Alamgir Alam.
These searches were conducted about a money laundering case involving the former chief engineer of the rural development department, Virendra K Ram, who was arrested by the probe agency last year. Virendra K Ram, accused of amassing property worth 100 Crore, was arrested in February 2023 in connection with alleged irregularities in the implementation of certain schemes. During the search, a pen drive containing alleged transaction details with some Jharkhand politicians was also recovered. Reacting to the ED raids, BJP MP from Jharkhand's Godda, Nishikant Dubey, shared a video of the raid at the premises linked to Sanjiv Lal, the PS to state minister Alamgir Alam, claiming that over 30 crore rupees had been recovered so far. He referred to Sanjiv Lal as the "personal secretary of Congress Legislative Party leader and Jharkhand government's corruption king Hemant government minister Alamgir Alam." Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also commented on the ED raids in Ranchi, calling them all 'looters' (dacoits).
He accused the families of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Shibu Soren of looting the country and expressed confidence that they would be hurt when the government took action against them. Jharkhand Minister Alamgir Alam, however, denied having any "official information" regarding the searches. He stated, "I have been watching TV and it says the premises are linked to the official PS (private secretary) provided to me by the government." Alamgir Alam clarified that Sanjiv Lal is a government employee who serves as his secretary, highlighting that Lal had previously served as a personal secretary to two former ministers. He emphasized that personal secretaries are typically appointed based on experience and refrain from commenting on the raids until the ED investigation is completed.
