M25 weekend closure: drivers told to stick to diversion to avoid London Ulez charges

Motorists planning to travel on the M25 this weekend are being cautioned against deviating from official diversions during the motorway's closure, as doing so could result in unexpected charges. The closure, only the second planned one in the history of the London Orbital motorway, affects a busy section in the south-west and is expected to cause significant delays and congestion for drivers.

National Highways, the authority responsible for the UK's motorways and major roads, has advised drivers to either avoid travelling if possible or to strictly adhere to the designated diversions. This warning comes as a result of the potential for incurring Ultra-Low Emission Zone (Ulez) charges for those who attempt to bypass the official routes.

The Ulez charges, implemented to reduce pollution in London, apply to vehicles that do not meet specific emission standards. Non-compliant vehicles entering the Ulez zone are subject to a charge of £12.50, but drivers can avoid this fee if they remain on the prescribed diversion routes. However, if drivers choose to ignore the official diversions and follow their satnavs for shortcuts, they risk entering the Ulez zone inadvertently and being charged.

Under normal circumstances, only petrol vehicles over 18 years old or diesel vehicles over nine years old are subject to the Ulez charge. This measure, which was expanded to cover the entirety of Greater London last year, aims to improve air quality by discouraging the use of older, more polluting vehicles.

The closure of a section of the M25 is expected to cause significant disruption, with alternative routes likely to become congested as drivers seek ways around the closure. However, deviating from the official diversions could result in unexpected costs for drivers of older vehicles, particularly if they inadvertently enter the Ulez zone.

Given the potential for disruption and additional charges, motorists are advised to plan their journeys carefully and to follow official guidance provided by National Highways. Additionally, drivers of older vehicles should be particularly cautious to avoid unintended entry into the Ulez zone, as this could result in unexpected charges.
